Please mark you calendars for November 8th at 7:00 p.m. for the upcoming HJRB board meeting.  It will be at the High School in room W-113.

We will be discussing the upcoming 2013 season and will let you know the dates and details for the bootcamp and evaluations. Also 2013 improvement projects.

This is also a very (very!) important meeting for those of you with kids in the U12 and especially the U10 age bracket.  Currently the core HJRB board is made up of parents with kids in U14, three of them in their final U14 year.  Our "retirement" is looming!

It is time we need new leadership to step forward!  The current board will take the program through the 2013 season but not beyond.  This is a great time to bring on new leaders to watch and observe, and to learn the ropes with the current board still in tact.  We will discuss at this meeting how we can go about this.

So this is a VERY important meeting for the future of the Holt Jr. Rams Baseball program.  We have worked very hard these past few years to continue and to improve this program.  But our time has come.  We'd hate to see our hard work go down the drain due to nobody stepping forward as we did back in 2009.  Also, to be truthful, our passion is fading and we really need some new blood; some gun-ho leaders to keep HJRB one of the best youth baseball programs in the area.

If you want to help but are unable to attend the upcoming board meeting please email me.

Last call for Volunteers

Thanks to those of you who volunteered to help already with the Mid-Michigan End-of-Season Tournament!!  We've already made over $100 profit for our program just running concessions two days.  We'll run it  again tonight and this weekend. This weekend should be good as many teams have to stick around and play back-to-back games.

I'm really just looking for 1 or 2 more people to help out on Sunday with Concessions for these slots.  PLEASE.

A) 11:30a - 3:00p
       or
B) 1:45p - 5:30ish (possibly done by 4:30 if there are no 5pm games).

**If you can only help on Saturday, some help from 3pm to 5:30pm would be nice!

Here's a rough schedule of the field usages for the weekend:

Saturday
9:00am (Games on fields 3, 5, 6)
11:00am (Games on fields 3, 5, 6)
2:30pm (Games on fields 3, 5, 6)
5:30pm (Game on field 6)

Sunday
9:30 (Game on field 6)
12:00 (Games on fields 5 & 6)
2:30 (Games on fields 5 & 6) - Championship games
5:00 (Games on fields 5 & 6) - Optional "if needed" games

This is a double elimination tournament which means you have to loose twice to be eliminated. In the championship game one team will be undefeated and the other will have one loss.  If the team with one loss wins, they have to play the same team again at 5pm as that would only be the other teams first loss.  Thus the "if needed" game.

Mid-Michigan PONY End-of-Season games in Holt

Hello, the end of the season is upon us.  Some of the teams are playing in the Mid-Michigan PONY End-of-Season Tournament, some teams are done, and some may have scheduled other tournaments.

I do need to ask (plead) for some volunteers though to help with the End-of-Season Tournament.  This EOS Tournament is actually 6 separate tournaments that Mason PONY puts together and is quite an undertaking.  We have once again volunteered our fields for use as have Charlotte, Fowlerville, Waverly, and of course Mason.  We are hosting 24 - 26 games on our fields.  This means we provide the umps and the field prep, and we can provide concessions if we want to raise funds for our program.

I have hired all the umps - Check.
I have concession volunteers for tonight - Check.
I need concession volunteers for Thursday (6pm-8:30pm) - ____________
My family will run concessions for Friday - Check.

For Saturday and Sunday I need both concession volunteers and field prep volunteers.
Saturday
Concessions, I need coverage from 9am until at least 5:30pm
Field Prep, I need 3-4 people from 8am until 5pm

Sunday
Concessions, I need coverage from 10:30am until at least 5:30pm
Field Prep, I need 2-3 people from 11am until 4:30pm

PLEASE help me out so I don't have to do everything myself.  Plus I really need help Saturday and Sunday after 11am as I can't be there in the afternoons.

Holt Jr. Rams Baseball Complex

Parents,
It's hard to believe the baseball season is more than half over already!  Last night was one of the special nights when we had all four of our HJRB fields in use.  Also Delhi teams were using field 1 and 2 so all SIX fields were in use, plus there was a team practicing at the batting cages.  The weather was great, there was plenty of baseball EVERYWHERE, the concession stand was making money for our program, it was a great atmosphere.

I took a LOT of pictures at all the fields last night and posted them on our Facebook  page if you want to check that out.

ALSO - did you know we get a 10% discount at Sweet Sensations ice-cream shop?  If you go after a game with your uniform on make sure to ask them for the "Jr Rams Discount".

Concession Volunteers

Parents,
We are looking for volunteers for the concession stand this season.  It's not too hard and can actually be pretty fun.  There is a small core of "primary" volunteers that do most of the work for this league; this is one way that you can help out without a huge time commitment.  So please help us out with this... which in turn helps fund projects for OUR ball club.

Contact Rachaelle Shuler via:
Email: jira_shuler@sbcglobal.net
or
Cell: 517-290-4080

Any and all help if very much appreciated.  Last year Rachaelle worked the stand herself a few times each and every week and there were a few others also that work it a lot.  Please help spread the work.

1st Annual Steinhaus Standoff

HJRB Parents:

As many of you know, HJRB will be hosting our very own tournament this year.  The 1st Annual Steinhaus Standoff will be held May 11th through May 13th.  At this time, we have six U14 teams and seven U12 teams scheduled to participate.  In order for the tournaments to be successful, we will need assistance from our HJRB families.  The assistance needed will be as follows:
  • Field Prep (chalking/raking and etc. before games)
  • Concession Stand (we are looking to have one open at both fields)
  • Clean Up (looking for a few people to make sure all bottles and etc. are put in trash containers, bases are put away after the last games of the day and etc.)
If you or your family are able to volunteer your time to assist with the tournament, please reply to this e-mail advising the day and times you are available and I will then work with you to create a finalized schedule.  Again, we will need a great deal of assistance from our HJRB families to successfully host these tournaments and therefore we appreciate everyone who donates their time and effort for this project.  Thanks again and Go Holt Rams!!!

Meet the Rams Spaghetti Dinner -- Monday, March 26th

HJRB Parents:

The Holt Rams Baseball teams (Varsity, JV and Freshman) are hosting a “Meet The Rams Spaghetti Dinner” on Monday, March 26th. This is a great opportunity for our Jr. Rams to mingle with the high school players and show our support for Holt Rams Baseball.  In addition, all Junior Rams players that attend the dinner will have their name put into a raffle to be a bat boy for a Varsity game.  The raffle winners will be able to be in the dugout with the high school players and will perform bat boy duties during the game.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our Jr. Rams players!!

Please see the attached flyer for more information on the dinner.  Tickets will be available at the door and there will be additional prize drawings throughout the evening.  In an effort to provide the committee with an estimated number of attendees from the Jr. Rams program, please e-mail me by Friday if you are planning on attending the Spaghetti dinner along with how many will be in your party.  Thank you for your time and we hope to see you on Monday, March 26th!!!  Go Rams!!!!

HJRB Player Fees due TODAY

In case anyone forgot, the player fees are due today.

Getting your payment in ASAP is  especially important for Tier-2 teams as they start indoor practice March 10.  I will be getting coaches a practice schedule soon for the times.

If you have a boy on a Tier-2 team and have not paid, they will not be able to practice with the team until payment is made.

Tier-1 teams are due also.  We need payment as this is your final commitment to the team so we can assume they are final.

Payment Links Active

In case you haven't noticed, the payment links are now active also.  If your boy is on a Tier-1 team the cost is $150, a Tier-2 team is $295.  Just like last year we are offering you the option of purchasing an extra pair of baseball pants for $15.  This is especially important for Tier-2 players as they will be playing in a lot of games and one pair may not cut it (especially for those kids that like to get dirty!)

The process is very simple. Just follow the payment link on the website, and provide the primary email address you used when you signed up your boy.  Hit LOOKUP and it will tell you what you owe and give you the option for the extra pants.  There is "Pay by Check" button and a "Buy Now" button for Credit/debit cards via Google Checkout.

If you opt to pay by check you will be presented with a remittance form and the name and address of our treasurer which is where you will mail it.

If you opt to pay via credit or debit card, you will be handed off to Google Checkout where you can complete the transaction.  You don't have to create a Google account to use Credit/Debit.   When you complete the transaction we get an email notification that you paid.   There is a 2% fee to use this method to help cover the transaction fees we get charged.

Here's the direct link also:  http://www.hjrb.org/?page=PaymentForm.asp

Payments are due March 1.

*** Also - don't forget about our  Five Dollar Wednesday Workouts, there's one tonight ***

Welcome to the 2012 baseball season!

Welcome Holt Jr. Rams Baseball Parents,

We are pleased to welcome back 130 players from last year and about 65 new players for us this season.  Many of the new kids may be siblings of kids that have already played for Jr. Rams Baseball, but many are new and consequently there are many new families that are new to all of this!  A big welcome to all of you!!

The teams have been formed and have now been posted on the www.hjrb.org website.  These are still somewhat preliminary as each year a few kids drop out and we sometimes need to adjust the numbers.  If a lot drop we may even need to eliminate a team and redistribute players.  We hope this doesn’t happen but has in the past.

As we sit right now,
  • We have four U14 teams (Three Tier-2 and one Tier-1.)  Two of these teams will play in a U13 division.
  • We will have five U12 teams (Three Tier-2 and two Tier-1 teams)
  • And we will have seven U10 teams again (one Tier-2 and six Tier-1 teams).

Just to recap our process.  The HJRB Board of Directors met to assemble the teams. The evaluation scores were used to group the boys by skill level.  We play in the Mid-Michigan PONY League and there are various skill levels/divisions from A – G with Division A being the toughest.  In order to compete in these various divisions we need to assemble teams the same way.  We cannot group kids based on friend requests, the school they attend, or randomly.  We absolutely  can’t do a draft (or spread the talent) as that would result in all our teams having some kids that are exceptional, some that are middle of the road, and some that are still learning the basics.   We need to build our “A” teams, then “B” teams, etc., in order to compete in the respective PONY divisions.  This also matches the kids up with other kids of similar skill level so there isn’t a wide disparity of ability.  We want all the boys to have a chance to win some games, improve their skills, and have fun.  We try our best to assemble the teams for this purpose and try to get them in the appropriate division so they play against kids of equivalent skills.   We don’t want teams that get squashed every game, and on the flip side, we don’t want our teams to be in a division where they blowout all the other teams.  We want good quality match-ups and that is what we will try to accomplish; the goal is to have fun and continuously improve.

Tier-2 teams play in four tournaments, have indoor practice that starts in March, and usually practice a lot more.  These teams require a lot of time commitment from the kids and parents.  We build as many as we can as long as we feel they will be able to compete at a higher level.  Not all kids that wanted to play on a Tier-2 team were able to be placed on one.  In this case they were placed on a Tier-1 team that best matched their score.

Player fees will be due March 1st.  The website is ready yet for payment but will be by tomorrow and I will send an email when it is.

A big thank-you to the Holt High School baseball coaches headed up by Nate Potts, varsity head coach, for their help in running the player evaluations.  The process they use is very similar to what your boy will see if he ends up trying out for high school ball.

To checkout the teams, go to the website and go to the TEAMS tab.  For privacy purposes for our kids, a simple registration process may be required to prove you have a kid in our program.

HJRB Evaluation Information

Parents,

Holt Jr. Rams Baseball player evaluations are this weekend (Feb 11 & 12)

Have you registered your boy??

The sessions are limited to 50 kids and they are filling up.  In fact the 11am sessions on Saturday and Sunday are already full.  If you haven’t registered, do so soon!

If anyone would like to switch their evaluation time to the less crowded 1pm or 3pm time slots on Saturday and/or Sunday, let me know.

The kids will be broken down into smaller groups and rotate around to five stations (similar to the bootcamp).  The group sizes will be from 4 - 14 kids with most of the groups around 8 - 10 kids; depending on which time slot your attending.  Make sure your boy gets a bib-number and a group assignment before leaving the checkout table.

Parents will not be allowed inside the gym this year.  Mainly because it gets too crowded/chaotic and becomes a big distraction for the boys.

Remember:

  • $10 is due at the door – this covers both days.  If you can only attend one day, it is still $10.
  • Session start times each day are 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm.   Attend the sessions you selected.
  • PLEASE arrive 15 minutes before your session’s start time to pay and get checked in!! They will be starting on time!
  • Each player will be given a bib-number and safety pins that a parent will need to pin to the shirt.
  • Do not wear cleats!  Wear gym shoes  (better yet, wear boots or outdoor shoes and change into dry gym shoes at the school)
  • Wear a cup and bring your ball mitt.
  • If you have them, bring your bat, batting helmet, and batting gloves. There will be an area set aside to store bat bags.
  • Please no food and no sunflower seeds!!
  • These Evaluations are conducted completely by the Holt high school baseball coaching staff with assistance from many of the high school players. Only the adult coaching staff will be doing the actual visual evaluation and determination of the scoring.
Also - after one of your evaluations, please stop by the uniform sizing table which will be down the hall by the cafeteria.  There your boy can try on jerseys, pants, and hats to find his exact size.  This will greatly help us ensure your boy is fitted with the proper sizes.  There should be someone there to help but it will be up to you to fill-in the sizes on the provided sheets.

If you attended bootcamp and did not get your shirt, we will have them this weekend.

Thanks,
Brian Kayser, President
Holt Jr. Rams Baseball

Dear Parents of potential High School freshman baseball players,

This is an exciting and I'm sure  nervous time.  All the years of baseball, and now... will he make the freshman team??  Good luck to all of you! On behalf of the entire HJRB Board of Directors, we hope he does; that is a big reason of why we exist!!

However, they can only take so many players of course.  If your boy will still be 14 or younger by April 30th he can still play in U14 for HJRB.  So if you would like to rely on HJRB as a fallback, that is fine, but you must register and attend evaluations along with everyone else.

As I understand it, it will be towards the end of March before you will know if your boy made the freshman team.  We will be forming our teams by the end of February.  So we will place your boy on a team and then if he makes the Freshman team that is great, we understand!  We will remove him from the HJRB team and fill in as necessary.

If you opt for a  Tier-1 team we can work with you on withholding payment until you know for sure.  However, if you opt for a Tier-2 team and he is placed on a Tier-2 team, you must pay in full because indoor practice sessions start March 10th and he should participate and be fully committed.  If he makes the Freshman team, you will be refunded the player fees minus the number of indoor practice sessions he attended ($10 per weekend).

Please note - come the end of March, if your boy does not make the freshman team and wants to play HJRB but you did not register or attend the player evaluations, he will NOT be placed on a team.  The only exception to this is if we are hurting for players and need a few extra to round out the teams, then we may make an exception if he has played with us in the past.

So please don't feel bad about starting the process with us and then jumping to Freshman ball; this happens every year and we expect that and will be happy for him!  We prefer that vs trying to get on a team last minute!!!

Thanks,
Brian Kayser
HJRB - President.

HJRB 2012 Player Registration - OPEN

Parents,
The website is now ready to accept online player registration for the 2012 baseball season.  I am a little behind this year getting this going so please help me out and register as soon as you can, it only takes about 5 minutes.  There is no payment due at this time.

If you had a player in the program last year you will also be prompted to take an optional survey based on the 2011 season.  This only takes about 3 - 5 minutes as well.

Player evaluations are February 11 and 12, available time slots will be 9am, 11am, 1pm or 3pm.  I know there are some conflicts with this weekend.  If you can attend at least one session that would be good.  If you are unsure which time slot will work, just pick one you think will work. If something changes you can email me and I can switch the time.  Even if you find out at the last minute that you can or can't make it at your designated time, just show up for one of the other time slots and we'll accommodate.  We may do a make-up session the following week depending on the need.

See the attachment and/or the website for more information and to register!!    http://www.hjrb.org

If you know of a friend or neighbor that has not played for HJRB in the past and may want to this year, please pass on this email.

Thanks,
Brian Kayser
President - HJRB

U13 Option

This year, Holt Junior Rams Baseball may field 1 or 2 teams in the Mason Pony League’s U-14 C-Division which is in fact a U-13 division.  This U-13 division has in the past included teams from other area programs that  are typically “A” level teams meaning that these teams are highly competitive and strong teams.  Eligibility for this U-13 division would be limited to 12 and 13 year olds who are currently in 7th or 8th grade and who evaluate at the necessary level to compete in this division.  If your son will be playing  in HJRB’s U-14 age bracket in the upcoming season and you wish for him to be considered for placement in the U-13 division, please indicating on the online player registration form when you sign him up.  It is anticipated that only 1 or 2 teams will be made at this level.  Once the rosters are filled for these teams, all other remaining players will be placed on U-14 teams as has been normally done in the past.  This team (or teams) will most likely be Tier-2.

2012 Bootcamp info

HJRB Parents,
Our 2nd annual BOOTCAMP is right around the corner now… this Saturday!  Thanks to everyone for the enthusiastic response to it; we are going to have close to 100 kids attending.  We’ll still be accepting on-line sign-ups until tomorrow evening at www.hjrb.org.  If you can still get to the registration page you can still sign-up, if it’s gone(around 7pm)… you’re too late.  We will take walk-ins at the door but the fee will be $45.

Please note: signing up for BOOTCAMP does not register your player for the 2012 season.  This is a separate sign-up that will be open next week!

For those signed up for Bootcamp:

  • PLEASE arrive 15 – 20 minutes before your start time to pay and get checked in!! They will be starting on time!
  • Make sure you get a name tag, it will have your group number on it so you know which station you will start at.  You will stay with that group the entire time, rotating from station to station.
  • Do not wear cleats!  Wear gym shoes (or boots and change into dry shoes at the school, there will be snow)
  • Wear a cup!!
  • Bring your ball mitt of course.  Also, if you have them, bring your bat, batting helmet, batting gloves, catchers gear, etc.  There will be an area set aside to store bat bags.
  • You can change into your bootcamp shirt if you want, but it is not required.
  • Please no sunflower seeds!!
  • There will be limited seating for parents available.  Please no young children in seating area if possible.
Here is an example of the rotation (Your actual station rotation will depend on which group you are assigned and may vary from this example):
5 min               Introduction by H.S. Varsity Coach Nate Potts to all camp participants
10 min             Stretch / Warm Ups
20 min             Batting Cages
20 min             Throwing with optional Pitching/Catching
20 min             Outfield
20 min             Infield
20 min             Tee’s
5 min               Camp Wrap up with all camp participants

If you signed up after January 16 we will not have a shirt for you at the camp, it can be picked up during evaluations.

Thanks again, and we’ll see a lot of you on Saturday!!!

Five Dollar Wednesday Workout

Parents,
If you plan on taking any kids out for this Wednesday the 18th, please shoot me a quick email with the number of kids (even if you already told me or emailed me in the past).  This is just to get good head count that I can give them so they know how much to reserve for us.

Also, last week was very packed at 7pm.  Since we can use the facility until 8:30, you may want to consider waiting until 7:15 or 7:30 to come out, you'd still have an hour.

Thanks!

Re: HJRB 2012 Bootcamp - Registering NOW

Just a quick reminder that the 2012 Bootcamp is next Saturday, January 21st.  Please make sure to register your HJRB player if you have not already done so as there are open spaces in Session 1 (9:00 a.m.) and Session 2 (11:30 a.m.).  Please note that Bootcamp Shirts will be available the day of Bootcamp to those players who are registered by 10:00 p.m. tonight, registrations after this time will receive their shirts at Evaluations in February.

As a reminder, if your son will be in the U14 age bracket for the 2012 season, he will need to attend Session 3 (2:00 p.m.).

Thanks again for being part of the Holt Junior Rams Baseball program....hope to see you on Saturday!!!

Holt Jr. Rams Baseball Families,

Registration is now open for the HJRB 2012 Bootcamp.

The camp is Saturday, January 21.

You can register online at http://www.hjrb.org

This is not a  mandatory camp but is very helpful for the kids to shake off the rust and to also get a preview of exactly what will be done during the player evaluations.  Last year we had 130 kids attend.

See the attached PDF Flyer for more information and please share this information with any friends and neighbors you know that have new kids that may want to play in the program this year.

Five Dollar Wednesday Workouts

Okay - I've dubbed these the "Five Dollar Wednesday Workouts".  The 5pm time slot didn't garner enough interest but the 7pm slot sure did. If everyone I heard from shows up we should have about 30 kids and we'll have most of the place to ourselves, including the indoor turf field.

To ensure everyone gets their fair time they also extended our time to 8:30pm.  I'll be there to help coordinate things but like I said, this isn't a drop off service so each kid needs to have an adult there and some of the adults will need to help work the pitching machines.  Also, please feel free to step up and run some drills in the turf area if you're so inclined.  If you need a break ask another parent to take over.  If you just want to play catch one-on-one with your boy, that's fine too.

No reservation is required, just show up.  But if you did email me that you will be there, please follow through.  I'd hate for only 10 kids to show up when I told them 30 and they are reserving almost the whole the place for us.

Here's what to expect:

$5 indoor batting on Wednesdays

HJRB Parents,
I worked out a deal with the new "Capital City Baseball Kingdom" facility in North Lansing to give HJRB players access to the facility for only $5 per player for one hour on Wednesdays.  This will consist of one or more batting cages (depending on the number of kids that show up), and if the turf area is not in use they will let you use that as well to throw and field.

This is not a drop off service and is not supervised by HJRB coaches or board members.  You will need to provide adult supervision and a few Dads and/or Moms will need to feed the ball machine(s).

We can start this as soon as this Wednesday (Jan 11) if there is enough interest; then every Wednesday following until it gets nice outside.

We are shooting for the 7pm - 8pm slot however there is a 5pm slot available also if there is enough interest in that time.  If there is enough interest in both time slots they may even do that.  We need to get at least 7 kids to be able to get the $5 rate.  The more kids we get, the more of the facility they will let us use.

Please respond back ASAP if you are interested in participating this Wednesday and let me know which time slot is preferred, 5pm or 7pm.

Thanks,
Brian Kayser
Holt Jr. Rams Baseball - President

This is not an HJRB sponsored event and we don't get any "kickback".  This is just a deal worked out to get our players some cheap indoor workouts to benefit our players. It is open to any HJRB player.
